HEROD,
KING OF JUDEA (1st century)

Herod was at the height of his madness when the Magi arrived. He had some Pharisees, Jews considered fervent and devout, executed in 6 B.C. They announced their messianic hope and the fall of Herod at the time of the Messiah's birth. Herod's fear of being superseded by those in his family who could claim legitimacy drove him to commit the most atrocious crimes within his family.
