ON THE HEADS OF THE MAGI

Until the 11th century, the Magi are represented with the Persian Phrygian cap. The crown first appears small and square for the first time in the Menologion of Basil II (10th c.), an illuminated manuscript now kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library.
