THE ESCAPE OF THE WISE MEN
AS SEEN BY THEOLOGIANS

For the Roman ecclesiastical writer Arnobius Junior (5th c.), “When Herod heard the news of the departure of the Magi, he was furious and burned all the ships of Tarshish, thus fulfilling the prophecy of David: “You will break the ships of Tarshish in your anger” (Psalm 47, v. 8). The Spanish bishop Lucas de Tuy (13th century) wrote: “When Herod learned that the Magi were transported by the ships of Tharsis, he ordered them to be burned. Denis the Carthusian (15th century), a Flemish theologian in the process of being beatified, also made his interpretation in his texts: “You will allow the ships of Tharsis to be burned by Herod, for this Prince (Herod), seeing that he was deceived by the magi, became very angry. He burned the ships of Tharsis because he learned that it was by this means that these magi had arrived.”
