THREE SUNS APPEAR
IN SPAIN DURING THE NATIVITY

According to St. Thomas Aquinas (13th century) “it is probable that in Spain three suns appeared at the time of the birth of Christ,” while for his Spanish contemporary, the Bishop of Tuy “a radiant light was seen in Spain at the time of the birth of Christ.” The appearance in Spain of a parhelion, an optical phenomenon of three suns, at the time of the journey of the Three Wise Men, is the version retained for centuries, especially in the writings of Antonio Calderon, Archbishop of Granada (17th century) or those of Pascasio de Seguin (18th century) in Mexico. “On the night our Redeemer was born, a clear and shining nebula appeared in the Spanish sky, shining like a sun, turning night into day” Ambrosio de Morales, Chronicler of King Felipe II (18th c.).
