Book "Christianism in Ceylan" by Pierre Courtenay published in 1900

Excerpt: “A Magus came from Ceylon; he was King of Jaffna. His name was Peria Perumal."

From the 19th to the 20th century, EXPERTS AND HISTORIANS AGREE THAT THE MAGUS OF INDIA CAME FROM JAFFNA AND WAS SURNAMED PERUMAL, WHICH MEANS "THE GREAT CHIEF."

Charles Matthew Fernando, considered in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as the best authority on Ceylon, gave a speech in 1906 in Colombo in which he said about the Magus of India, “In his kingdom, he was called Gaspard Peria Perumal. He was King of Jaffna. Perumal is still a very common Tamil name which means the Great Chief. Peria Perumal apparently lived to a ripe old age because he was still alive when the apostle Thomas came to India.” The same information is found in many books, including “A history of Christianity in India” by George Mark Moraes in 1964 and “Maanaveera Naadu of the Southern Pandian Kingdom” by Alex Cruz Muthaiah in 1995.
