According to the writer Al Makkari (1575-1632), the 23th Nazari Emir, nicknamed Al Zagall, took refuge after the fall of Granada in Oran with his family and then settled in Tlemcen (Algeria), where his descendants would live. Boabdil, took refuge in Fez (Morocco) in 1493 where he settled. Some of his descendants are said to have been identified by the writer and politician Blas Infante in Tetouan, bearing the names of Othman and Nordin Ben Lahmar in reference to the founder of the Al Hamar dynasty.
