KINGDOMS OF
THE THREE WISE MEN

BALTHAZAR & THE KINGDOM
OF AKSUM (ETHIOPIA)

In popular Ethiopian tradition, even in philately, King Bazen, known as the Magi King Balthazar, ruled over the powerful kingdom of Aksum, considered one of the four great powers of antiquity, along with Persia, Rome and China. The tomb of King Bazen in Aksum, presented as the burial place of the Biblical Magi Balthazar, is dated to the beginning of the 1st century AD.

GASPARD & THE PANDYAN KINGDOM
(INDIA/SRI LANKA)

At the time of the Nativity, the south of India and the north of Sri Lanka were part of a Tamil Kingdom called Pandyan, from where the Magus of India is presumed to have originated. Gaspard, which comes from the Hebrew “Gizbar,” meaning “the one who brings treasures” or “the treasurer,” appears throughout history with other nicknames such as Awrahan (the Great Wise One) or Perumal (the Great Chief).

MELCHIOR
& THE ATROPATENE
KINGDOM
(IRAN/AZERBAIJAN)

Melchior comes from the Aramaic “Melek,” as well as from the Hebrew “Melech,” which means “King of Light.” These were the two languages of reference during the Magi’s journey to Judea. In the first century AD, the Parthian Empire was an important political and cultural power in ancient Persia. Atropatene, located today in Iranian Azerbaijan as well as in the Republic of Azerbaijan, was one of the regions of this Empire from which the Magus Melchior would have come from.
