Canvas "Alonso Avis Granada-Venegas, Señor de la Torre de Mondujar"

(Spain, 21st c.)

THE DESCENDANT OF THE KINGS OF GRANADA WHO REFUSED TO BECOME KING OF ANDALUCIA

Alonso Avis Granada-Venegas had the distinction of being a descendant of the kings of Granada through his mother, and a presumed descendant of the Umayyads through his father, Diego Avis de Córdoba, Fernando de Córdoba y Valor's cousin, who would be named King of Andalucia as Aben Humeya. At Christmas of 1568, the Moorish general El Gorri offered Alonso Avis Granada-Venegas the opportunity to succeed Aben Humeya as king of the Moors. The general had participated in the massacre of Governor Juan Gibaja in Huecija. Alonso Avis Granada-Venegas decided to remain loyal to the Spanish Crown. Without male offspring, his granddaughter married Andres Gibaja, regent of Almeria, grandson of the murdered governor Gibaja.
