from " Gallery of Portraits of the Generalife " The original works have disappeared; only photographic reproductions exist.

ALONSO GRANADA VENEGAS, DESCENDANT OF THE KINGS OF GRANADA, WAS A FEARSOME WARRIOR IN THE SERVICE OF THE CHRISTIAN KINGS.

Son of Don Pedro de Granada Venegas (Cidi Yahya bin Yahya), grandson of Pedro Venegas de Cordoba (a nobleman who converted to Islam), Alonso Granada Venegas born Ali Omar ibn Nazar (1467-1534) earned his titles, including that of "Capitan General de la Armada del Mar y Costas del Reyno (Cristiano) de Granada", thanks to his victories that led to the downfall of the Muslim kingdom of Granada. He led a naval battle in Adra in 1491 against the Moors. The victory of Alonso Granada Venegas for the Catholic Monarchs is celebrated every year with the "Fiestas de los Moros y Cristianos" in La Alquéria in Andalusia.
