Los barcos del puerto de Cranganore, en la India, de donde se cree que zarp\u00f3 el mago Gaspar, ten\u00edan conexiones mar\u00edtimas regulares con el puerto del reino de Axum (Etiop\u00eda) desde el que gobernaba el rey Bazen, alias el mago Baltasar. A trav\u00e9s del puerto de Axum, los romanos tra\u00edan por mar seda, especias y piedras preciosas desde la India. Etiop\u00eda ten\u00eda v\u00ednculos mar\u00edtimos directos con C\u00e1diz, tambi\u00e9n llamada Gades, como confirman los escritos de los historiadores Plinio el Viejo (siglo I) y Coelius Antipater (siglo I). &#8220;Un barco de Gades naufrag\u00f3 en Etiop\u00eda&#8221;, dice el gran navegante Eudoxos (siglo I). La ruta mar\u00edtima era privilegiada en aquella \u00e9poca. El reino de Meroe, al norte de Etiop\u00eda y al sur de Egipto, manten\u00eda relaciones dif\u00edciles con Roma. En varias ocasiones, Roma intent\u00f3 invadir Meroe sin \u00e9xito.
