El texto del Evangelio según Mateo revela poco sobre los países de origen de los magos y sus reinos. Los escritos de teólogos del siglo II, como Justino de Nablus, Ireneo de Lyon y Clemente de Alejandría, arrojan luz sobre la gran historia de estos sabios. El texto según Mateo habla sólo de los Magos y no de los Reyes. Esta asimilación de los Magos con el estatus de Reyes aparece con Tertuliano de Cartago (siglo II), fundador de la teología occidental.
